A little less than a week ago, the Arlington County Republican Committee held a fundraiser with Ed Gillespie! While I was there, everyone was commenting on what a great event it was and the large turnout. Lots of Arlington GOP stars were there, including Aaron Ringel, Eric Brescia, and Dave Foster.

I thought that I would post a few short excerpts from Mr. Gillespie himself. Enjoy.

We may be in the minority in Arlington, but their are a lot of us. The Arlington Republicans are like the green berets.  The notion that we can write off Fairfax, Arlington, and Alexandria and just run big numbers down south doesn’t work anymore. We need strong turnouts everywhere….

What you do here makes a difference, whether it is knocking on doors, making phone calls, etc. I heard a story once, here’s how it went:

One day a man was walking along the beach with his wife. They noticed thousands of starfish lying on the beach. As they were walking, his wife started picking them up and gently throwing them back into the ocean.

He asked her, “What are you doing?”

The wife said, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.  The surf is up and the tide is going out.  If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

Looking shocked, he said, “Don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?  You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the wife bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf.  Then, smiling at her husband, she said… “I made a difference for that one.”

Bob McDonnell’s win was the harbinger of what is to come. Virginia is a purple state. We lost two senate seats, control of the state senate, Barack Obama won the state, and then McDonnell won by one of the largest margins in history …and of course New Jersey, where I grew up, but then had the good sense of moving to Virginia..

New Jersey is a blue state. Chris Christie winning there is important. Massachusetts is a Navy blue. I tell people that its so blue that deep blue that you if it were a sock you’d have to hold it up to the light to tell people that its blue. And we won that….

What a difference a year makes. I’m sure Tiger, Conan, and Barack Obama agree.

We need to take it up a notch..or risk becoming like Greece. When people complain about problems in the future, I’ll say, where were they in 2010?

There are two kinds of Democrats this year: those in trouble, and those who don’t know it yet!

Aside from these quips, Mr. Gillespie had some good advice for the GOP. He mentioned that John McCain did poorer among Hispanic voters than George W. Bush did, and that we need to explain that we are 100% for legal immigration.

He also warned the GOP of becoming and older, white party, as well as a Southern/Western party. He said we must find candidates that appeal to independents.

In the words of ACRC Chairman Chris Berg, Mr. Gillespie is, “A great friend of Virginia and the Arlington County Republican Committee.”
