House Republican Whip Rep. Eric Cantor

House Republican Whip Rep. Eric Cantor

Today’s NY Times has a long and (fairly) positive feature about Virginia’s own Rep. Eric Cantor, the House Republican Whip.  The article noted:

“As Republicans confronted President Obama in another budget battle last week, their leadership included another new face: Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who as the party’s chief vote wrangler is as responsible as anyone for the tough line the party has taken in this first legislative standoff with Mr. Obama. This battle has vaulted Mr. Cantor to the front lines of his party as it tries to recover from the losses of November.”

I don’t think the article quite does justice to the masterful job that Cantor did in keeping the caucus together in opposing the pork-laden, highly dubious “stimulus” bill.  Nevertheless, it’s a good sign that attention is being focused on a new generation of Republican leaders that are removed from the excesses of the earlier Republican House majority.
